Are you a new or expectant mom? Then keep reading! You’ve probably got a million questions about bottle feeding and organic formula, and this will help answer a few.
Becoming a new mom, especially for the first time, is so exciting. But it can also be pretty scary! Moms tell us they worry about doing the wrong thing all the time.
The thing is, motherhood is a real skill. And as well prepared as you think you are, there’ll be a heap of learning on the job, too!
Breast Isn’t Always Best
One of the biggest dilemmas facing baby moms is feeding. And whilst we all agree that starting bub on the breast is best, it’s just not always possible. And as time passes, it may not be practical, either.
One thing’s for sure, and that is that all moms are different. If you choose to feed your baby organic formula, just do it. It’s your choice.
Many people forget that formula has come a long way since its launch in the early 20th century. Today, it is a far superior product that can, in many cases, be more beneficial for your infant.
Choose European Organic Formula
But that does depend on which organic formula you choose. The general consensus is that European organic formula is best.
Organic formula, such as Holle and HiPP, are considered superior due to stricter health and safety regulations in Europe. They are also non-GMO and free from harmful additives.
More worrying, however, are the ingredients added to US baby formula, which have been banned in Europe, such as carrageenan. And ingredients that may not be banned, but are considered unsuitable for babies. These include soy, sucrose, and DHA/ARA.
Understanding The Dos And Don’ts
Now, even when you have chosen the very best organic formula, there are still some things to avoid whilst feeding.
Your organic formula will come with instructions, and these should be adhered to. In addition, there are a few more health and safety guidelines to protect your precious little one.
Choose The Right Formula
It is very important to choose the correct formula for your child. Do not believe that one-size-fits-all. There are formulas to suit different ages.
Most importantly, because formula is not sterile, you should be extra vigilant with babies born prematurely. Either use ready-to-serve formula, or concentrated liquid.
Preparation Is Key
It’s all about safety and hygiene when preparing bub’s feed, so do not be tempted to take shortcuts. For example, microwaving the bottle may be quick, but it is not advisable, due to inconsistencies in heat.
Do not use organic formula that is past its expiry date.
Keeping It Clean
Remember you are dealing with a tiny human being, who hasn’t yet built up a good immune system. Never prepare organic formula without first thoroughly washing your hands, and the counter top where you will prepare the feed.
It is also essential to wash bottles, nipples, caps and rings in hot soapy water each time, both before and after filling the bottle.
Cool Is Best
Do not use mixed formula that has been a room temperature for more than two hours. Store the bottle in the back of the fridge, and use within 24 hours.
Do not freeze prepared formula. It is far better, and safer, to use ice packs if you need to transport formula.
Always store powered organic formula according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Stick To the Plan
Do not be tempted to change the formula recipe, by adding different ingredients or additives. The reason why European organic formula is recommended is because it doesn’t contain unnecessary ingredients.
If you’re a new mom, well-meaning friends and family will suggest all sorts of things to add to the formula, to help bub sleep. Don’t go there!
Water Isn’t Always Water
Do not use anything except ordinary water, boiled to at least 70 degrees celsius, to prepare the organic formula. Do not use mineral water, as some of the minerals are potentially harmful to infants.
Water must be properly boiled to kill any bacteria that may be present. Mix the formula within 30 minutes of boiling the water, and then cool the bottle by holding under a running tap.
Avoid Overfeeding
Moms tend to worry that bub is not getting enough to eat. Your organic formula container will give some indication, but it’s also a case of trial and error. Age, weight, and appetite play a large part in this.
We know it can sometimes be tricky to get bub started on the bottle, but once they get started, follow their lead. When they let you know they have had enough, don’t force them to keep drinking.
They generally let you know by getting unsettled or turning their head away. So long as you baby is healthy, and gradually gaining weight, this is quite normal.
Don’t Buy Into Mommy Guilt
The biggest ‘don’t’ of all while feeding organic formula, is don’t buy into mommy guilt. Breastfeeding doesn’t work for everyone, and high-quality organic formula works very well instead.
Many moms have problems with lactation and can’t produce enough milk. Others have to go back to work and find it too difficult to continue with breastfeeding. Whatever the reason, it is up to you.
Did you know that 80% of moms surveyed said they felt guilt when they switched to formula feeding? Yet, by the time bub is six months old, only 42% of moms are still breastfeeding.
Happy Mom, Happy Bub
Contrary to what some breastfeeding moms may tell you, you will still bond with your baby through bottle feeding. Hold your baby close, skin to skin when possible, and look into his or her eyes. You can even change sides, to mimic breastfeeding.
If you are a working mom, you will certainly find life less stressful by switching to formula. And a happier mom generally means a happier bub.
The other ‘myth’ to ignore is that your baby won’t be as healthy on organic formula, as it will with breastfeeding. Just because breast milk passes on antibodies, doesn’t mean your baby will always be healthy.
What if mom doesn’t have a strong immune system, or constantly hangs out with unhealthy people?
Free from chemicals, additives, GMOs, pesticides and antibiotics, European organic formula is safe and healthy, and will help your child thrive.
